No — and this is the single most common cause of tiles lifting in Indian homes. Vitrified tiles absorb under 0.5% water, so cement mortar cannot form a proper bond with the tile back. The floor develops hollow patches and starts popping within a few years. Use a C2-class polymer-modified tile adhesive, which bonds chemically instead of relying on water absorption.

In wet and high-use areas, yes. Epoxy grout is non-porous, so it does not absorb water, stain, harbour mould or discolour to that familiar grey-brown over time. For kitchen backsplashes, bathroom floors, balconies and commercial spaces it typically pays for itself in avoided regrouting. For dry interior walls and bedrooms, a good cementitious grout is perfectly adequate.

A 20 kg bag of C2 adhesive covers roughly 40–50 sq ft at a 4 mm notched-trowel bed. Large-format tiles and uneven substrates need a thicker bed and therefore more material — budget closer to 35 sq ft per bag for 600×1200 mm tiles. Use 2 mm for rectified large-format tiles, 3 mm for standard floor tiles and 1.5–2 mm for wall tiles. Non-rectified tiles have slightly rounded edges and need the wider joint to absorb dimensional variation. Do not go below 1.5 mm on any floor — tiles need room to expand, and a joint that is too tight causes tenting.

Yes. Tiles and grout are a finish, not a waterproof membrane. Bathroom floors, shower areas, balconies and terraces need a liquid-applied waterproofing membrane over the screed before tiling, carried up the wall at least 150 mm — and to full height in shower enclosures. Skipping it is what causes seepage into the room below.
